Saturn . How to Replace the Oxygen Sensor in a MustangComputer-controlled cars require a lot of input to meter air and fuel in the appropriate ratio. The Mustang's O2 (oxygen) sensor is basically a temperature probe; a fuel-rich mixture will make exhaust gases cooler, and a fuel-lean mixture will heat them up. If your O2 sensor becomes unresponsive or fails outright, then fuel economy, horsepower and engine performance will all suffer. Mustangs produced before 1996 use one oxygen sensor before the catalytic converter; those produced later utilize a second one after the converter. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack Jack stands (2) 7/8-inch wrench or specialized O2 sensor removal socket Flat head screwdriver Anti-seize lubricant Step by Step : 1 Slip a jack under your Mustang's front sub-frame or engine cross-member. Lift the car about 8 inches and install jack stands under the cross-member then lower the jack. 2 Locate the O2 sensors. A Mustang can have anywhere from one to four, depending on the specific application. Pre-1996 four cylinders as well as V6 and V8 engines utilizing a single exhaust will have one in the head pipe or the 2-into1 exhaust crossover just below the manifold(s). Older, dual-exhaust cars will often have one in each pipe. 3 Disconnect the wiring harness from the O2 sensor by pushing down on the connector's locking tab and unplugging it from the sensor. 4 Slip either a 7/8-inch wrench or O2 sensor removal socket over the O2 sensor and turn it counterclockwise to remove it. An open-ended wrench will usually work for the second O2 sensor, but you may need to use a combination of an O2 sensor socket, universal joint and extension piece to reach the forward-most sensors. 5 Apply a dab of anti-seize compound onto the threads of the new O2 sensor and screw it in place. Tighten the O2 sensor as much as you can--stripping an O2 sensor bung with hand tools is almost impossible so don't be too concerned about over-torquing it. 6 Reconnect the wiring harness plug and make sure that the locking tab on the plug fully engages the O2 sensor harness. 7 Use the floor jack to raise the car slightly off of the jack stands. Remove the jack stands and lower the car. Tips & Warnings Oxygen sensors will typically last around 100,000 miles before needing replacement. If you intend to own your Mustang for at least that long, use anti-seize compound on the threads to ease later replacement. A little bit of time spent here can save a lot of grief later on if you snap the O2 sensor head off while trying to remove it.
Saturn . How to Replace Oxygen Sensors on a Toyota 4RunnerModern automobiles use a sophisticated system of sensors that send data to a computer, which adjusts the vehicle's performance based on the data. The oxygen sensor detects the amount of oxygen present in exhaust gases, which the computer uses to adjust the vehicle's fuel/air mixture. This improves the vehicle's performance and reduces the amount of polluting emissions. All Toyota 4Runners manufactured after 1994 have two oxygen sensors. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Jack Jack stands (4) Wrench Socket set Step by Step : 1 Start the 4Runner and let it warm up for several minutes. The oxygen sensors are located in the exhaust pipe, which contracts when it's cold, making it difficult or impossible to remove the sensors. Once the vehicle is warm, turn off the engine and engage the parking brake. 2 Raise the vehicle with a jack and support it on jack stands. 3 Climb underneath the vehicle and locate the catalytic converter. The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust pipe located towards the front of the vehicle. Follow the exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter towards the front of the 4Runner until you see the oxygen sensor protruding from the top side of the pipe. An insulated wire will lead away from the sensor towards the engine. This is the forward oxygen sensor. 4 Follow the insulated wire away from the sensor to the first connection. Use a wrench to turn the connector nut counterclockwise and disconnect the wire. Do not disconnect the wire from the sensor itself. The wire lead is part of the sensor, and the new sensor will come with a new lead installed. 5 Use the wrench or socket to remove the two nuts from the bolts that hold the sensor on the exhaust pipe. Pull the sensor out of the pipe. You will probably need to lightly tap the sensor to loosen it from its port. 6 Insert the new sensor and replace the nuts. Connect the new sensor's wire lead to the wire connector. 7 Locate the aft oxygen sensor by following the exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter towards the rear of the truck. The aft sensor is mounted in the same way as the forward sensor. Follow Steps 4 through 6 to replace this sensor. Tips & Warnings Use caution when working around the hot exhaust pipe and catalytic converter. If you neglect to do so, you run the risk of draining all the fluid out of the master cylinder and drawing air into the lines from the top. Now, that isn't fatal — it simply means that you have to go back and bleed your master cylinder until you suck the air out of that end of the system — but who needs the extra work? If you goof and have to bleed the master cylinder, it's the same deal as bleeding your brakes (friend and all). Just bleed it at the point where the brake lines attach to the cylinder, or at the master cylinder bleeder nozzle, if you have one (see Figure 18-16). 10.
